DECIEM The Ordinary Skincare ReviewFriday, March 24, 2017
In Tuesdays blog post I explained that I was going to be reviewing some products from the brand The Ordinary in today's post. A few weeks ago I was kindly sent some skincare items from the brand DECIEM, I was sent some products from the brands Hylamide and The Ordinary and I have been trying them out over the last few weeks. On Tuesday I wrote a post on my thoughts on the products by the brand Hylamide and today I am sharing my thoughts on the products from The Ordinary.
I was sent a mixture of skincare products and after emailing me to tell me the products they were sending, DECIEM kindly emailed me again and said they were also sending me their 2 new primers as they thought my daughters would like to try them, especially my eldest daughter Cole, who is a makeup artist. I thought this was lovely and very kind of DECIEM too. Today I am going to tell you about each product I received and then how I have been using the products and what I think of them and if they have had any impact on my skin at all.
My Skin Type
My skin is dry, now when I say dry, I don't mean it is a bit dry in certain areas of my face, no, my skin is extremely dry all over my face, I don't think people really understand just how dry it is until they feel it for themselves, it feels like sandpaper and I have some horrible flaky patches too. My skin is also dehydrated, not a good combination really is it? Over the years I have tried countless products, some work for a little while but because of my medical conditions and the medication I take, my skin is a nightmare and has become the bane of my life, as dramatic as that sounds it is true, it really gets me down. I can also, because of my medication and conditions, suddenly become allergic to a product I've been using for a while, so I needed to give these products a really good test for a good period of time, I don't think you can rush trialling skincare as it can take a good few weeks to know if a product is working for you or not.
Who Are DECIEM?
DECIEM, The Abnormal Beauty Company was founded by Brandon Truaxe in 2013, DECIEM started with one product in one market, they now own and operate more than 10 brands in the beauty world and are the people behind Niod, Hylamide, The Ordinary, AB Crew, Grow Gorgeous and many more brands. DECIEM'S approach to skincare is to produce effective skincare products at reasonable prices so us as the consumer gets the best product without paying a hefty price tag.
The Ordinary - Buffet 30ml - £12.70
How DECIEM Describe Buffet
This formula combines a comprehensive array of studied technologies to target multiple signs of ageing at once. The technologies are Matrixyl 3,000 peptide complex (with palmitoyl-pentapeptide 35), Matrixyl Synthe'6 peptide complex (with palmitoyl tripeptide-38), Syn-Ake peptide complex (with dipeptide diaminobutyroyl benzylamide diacetate), Relistase peptide complex (with acetylarginyltryptophyl diphenylglycine), Argirelox peptide complex (with acetyl hexapeptide-8, pentapeptide-18), Probiotic complex (with lactococcus lactis lysate), in a base of 11 skin-friendly amino acids and multiple hyaluronic acid complexes. The total concentration of these technologies in the formula by weight is 25.1%.
Buffet is oil, alcohol, silicone and nut free and is cruelty free and vegan, it is a multi technology peptide serum and is targeted at all signs of ageing. The name of this formula was inspired by some brands referring to their expensive products offering combinations of these technologies as a "buffet" distastefully comparing such products to buffets that offer various kinds of food in one sitting.
The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 30ml - £5.90
How DECIEM Describe The Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) can attract up to 1,000 times its weight in water. The molecular size of HA determines its depth of delivery in the skin. This formulation combines low-, medium- and high-molecular weight HA, as well as a next-generation HA crosspolymer at a combined concentration of 2% for multi-depth hydration in an oil-free formula. This system is supported with the addition of Vitamin B5 which also enhances surface hydration. A more advanced HA formulation with 12 forms of HA, including precursors of HA, is offered by our brand NIOD in Multi-Molecular Hyaluronic Complex.
The Hyaluronic Acid is alcohol free, silicone free, nut free, cruelty free and vegan, it is a hydration support formula with ultra pure vegan Hyaluronic acid.
The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + HA2% 30ml - £5.80
How DECIEM Describe Lactic Acid 10& + HA 2%
Lactic Acid is an alpha hydroxyl acid that exfoliates the skin. This 10% formulation offers mild exfoliation and is supported with a purified Tasmanian pepperberry known to reduce signs of inflammation and sensitivity that is often associated with exfoliation. This formula contains a studied Tasmanian Pepperberry derivative to help reduce irritation associated with acid use. This derivative is of plant origin and varies in colour seasonally and this colour variation may be apparent in the formula from time to time.
The Lactic Acid is alcohol, silicone and nut free and is cruelty free and vegan, it is a high strength lactic acid superficial peeling formulation.
Using The Skincare Products & My Thoughts
I have been using The Ordinary skincare products over the last few weeks now, I have used them alongside the Hylamide skincare products, as explained in my last blog post and I have also used both brands exclusively so I could see how they also performed alone. I have been using the products morning and evening for around 6 weeks now and today I am going to share my thoughts on them.
How I Have Been Using The Products
• Acid Toner
• Sub Q Eyes (Hylamide)
• Buffet (The Ordinary)
• Hyaluronic Acid (The Ordinary)
• Cleanse (Double if wearing makeup)
• Acid Toner
• Sub Q Eyes (Hylamide)
• Sub Q Anti-Age (Hylamide)
• Hyaluronic Acid (The Ordinary)
• Lactic Acid (The Ordinary)
I really like the packaging of The Ordinary products, I think it looks clean and fresh and almost clinical. The products all come in a box, with the bottle inside. The skincare products I have been testing, all come in a glass bottle with a pipette style applicator.
I have been using approximately 1 pipette of the Hyaluronic Acid, the Buffet and the Lactic Acid when using them. I use them all over my face and neck apart from around my delicate eye area. The Buffet is a very similar product to the Hylamide Sub Q Anti Age, but the Sub Q Anti Age has a higher concentration of activities and more technologies within the formula, I have used the Buffet in a morning the the Sub Q Anti Age in the evening, both leave my skin feeling hydrated and both work really well, I have used them exclusively also, so I could see if I preferred one more than the other and if one worked better than the other and I would say that the Sub Q does hydrate my skin slightly better and seemed to have quicker results but they are both brilliant products, so depending on your budget both will work brilliantly.
The Hyaluronic Acid is amazing for my skin, I love it, it feels lovely and fresh and cooling when I apply it and my skin loves it too, it's an amazing product and perfect for my skin. I was wary of using the Lactic Acid at first, I did wonder if it would sting my skin a little but it didn't at all, it contains Tasmanian Pepperberry to reduce irritation associated with using acids, this is why it has a colour to it, the colour comes from the Pepperberry, I didn't feel any irritation at all and my skin is so much softer and smooth and looks so much better. Lactic Acid should not be used if you have sensitive or peeling skin, and sunscreen must be worn as your skin will be more sensitive to the sun when using it.
I am absolutely bowled over by the results I have from using The Ordinary skincare products, my skin looked and felt so much better after only a couple of days, and after a couple of weeks I noticed a difference in my dehydration lines and my skin felt so smooth and I didn't have any flaky patches at all. Combining both The Ordinary and Hylamide products has been incredible for my skin, my skin looks so much better and feels amazing and as I said in Tuesdays post, I am getting compliments on my skin which for me is amazing because it has been in such a state the last few months. Another thing I have noticed is that if I am too unwell to use my skincare products, my skin doesn't feel super dry and isn't flaky from missing either a morning or evening routine, I have as I said in my last post gone 36 hours without using my routine and my skin wasn't in the state it would have been around 30 minutes of missing my routine had I done that previous to using the products.
I would highly recommend The Ordinary skincare products, they are very affordable and perform equally as well, if not better than much higher priced, high end skincare I have used and I will definitely continue to use the products. I have noticed a massive improvement in my skin and it is no longer the bane of my life, I feel like I have finally found my skincare saviours. You don't have to mix the Hylamide with The Ordinary and you could use products from just one range and as I said if you wanted to use The Ordinary exclusively, you can use The Ordinary Buffet in place of the Hylamide Sub Q Anti Age but I do highly recommend using the Sub Q Eyes, its incredible!
Should you want to give any of The Ordinary products a try, you can find the Buffet here the Hyaluronic Acid here and the Lactic Acid here, the Lactic Acid is also available in 5% here and for information on all The Ordinary products is on the DECIEM website here.
The Ordinary High - Adherence Silicone Primer 30ml - £3.90
How DECIEM Describe The High-Adherence Silicone Primer
The High Adherence Silicone Primer is a blurring surface smoother and primer and is nut, alcohol and oil free and is cruelty free and vegan.
The Ordinary High-Spreadability Fluid Primer 30ml - £5.50
How DECIEM Describe The High-Spreadability Fluid Primer
This new generation of primer is a lightweight serum-like formula that increases the spreadability of subsequent complexion makeup to help avoid the unnatural and uneven accumulation of pigments especially around the eyes and on dry skin. The formula also acts as a light, non-oily surface hydrator for a natural dewy look.
The High-Spreadability Fluid Primer is water, alcohol, oil and nut free and is cruelty free and vegan, it is a lightweight surface smoother and primer with high flexibility silicones.
Using The Primers & My Thoughts
As I said I was also sent the 2 new primers from The Ordinary for my daughters to try, they have both been using them over the last few weeks and I have used them a few times also.
The High-Adherence Silicone primer comes in a tube as it has a different consistency to other products from The Ordinary. This primer gives more of a matte look to the skin, I was surprised the first time I used this as it is a white cream/lotion style product and I assumed it would be clear in colour, another thing that surprised me was the primer didn't feel at all like any other silicone based primer I have used before or any silicone based product, it felt much more like a hydrating moisturiser and felt really lovely on my skin. My foundation applies beautifully over the primer and looks flawless, the primer keeps my makeup looking lovely and flawless all day, my pores and fine lines are blurred and much less obvious. I really like this primer and considering I usually never buy products containing silicone, I was very pleasantly surprised by this and it is a fantastic price too, I doubt very much you will find a primer this good on the high street and for £3.90 it's an absolute bargain and feels like a product costing 4 times it's price tag.
The High-Spreadability Fluid primer comes in a glass bottle with a pipette style applicator, this primer feels a lot like the Hyaluronic Acid to the touch, it is a serum like formula so feels lovely to apply and it feels lovely on the skin, and not like a silicone based product at all. The primer is said to help avoid the unnatural and uneven pigments around the eyes and on dry skin and gives a dewy look. I really like this primer, it feels lovely to apply and my skin feels incredibly soft after using it, my foundation applies well over the top and looks flawless all day. It is fantastic for my dry skin and also blurs out my pores and fine lines and they are hardly visible at all.
I love both primers but for me I think the High-Spreadability just tips the scales slightly, they are both amazing though and I will continue to use them.
Both my daughters have been using the primers and they love them too, Cole prefers the High-Adherence and Lissy prefers the High-Spreadability but they do both like both, but like me if they had to choose one those would be their choices, the girls are like me and don't like silicone based products but they were both also pleasantly surprised to find that the primers don't feel like a silicone based product at all.
The girls were both really pleased with the way their foundation both applied and looked after using the primers and both girls were pleased at how long their makeup lasted, my eldest daughter works 14 hour days some days and Lissy wears her makeup for around 16 hours if she is going out after university and both girls loved that their makeup looked just as good when they removed it as when they applied it. My eldest daughter is a makeup artist so has a lot primers in her professional kit and all high end but she said she will definitely be purchasing both of The Ordinary primers for her kit as she feels they perform much better than most of the high end and very expensive primers she has in her kit.
Overall myself and the girls all really like both of the primers, they don't have that slimy silicone feel to them, our makeup feels and looks flawless all day and we were all very pleased that our pores were blurred out fantastically and for me any fine lines I have are too. None of us can believe what an amazing price both the primers are and we all highly recommend them both, it just depends what your preference is, I would say if like me you have very dry skin, the High-Spreadability primer would be best for you but they are both great products.
You can find the High-Adherence primer on the DECIEM website here and the High-Spreadability Fluid primer here.
WOW! What a long post, you deserve a medal if you got this far! But I wanted to give you as much information as possible, I like to try and give as much information as possible, especially with skincare as I have struggled so much in the past trying to find skincare products online.
I think you can tell that I am extremely impressed with The Ordinary, their products are amazing and such an affordable price for incredible products too, I will continue to use the products and will 100% be re purchasing, and checking out their other products, I already have my eye on the Rosehip Oil and I've heard there are some acid toners launching and foundations too, so those will 100% be mine asap.
